Steamboat Lake Outpost

Cross-country ski tours

Discover the solitude and beauty of Steamboat’s backcountry.

Our cross-country ski tours get you off the crowded mountain and off groomed trails for an authentic nature experience.

Whether you’ve never given cross-country or nordic skiing a try, or you are experienced and looking to explore new terrain, we are passionate about sharing this activity with others! We’re lucky enough to be located near some of the best touring terrain, with gentle inclines, beautiful aspen groves, frozen lakes and towering evergreens. And if you’re lucky, you just might see a fox or moose!

2-hour Guided Tour

Our Cross-Country Ski Tours offer:

We keep our tours private to your group only. This enables us to tailor your trip to your experience, athletic level, and interest.

Whether this is your first time on skis, or you ski often, we have a route for you. We provide instruction for folks who are new to skiing.

Whether you are looking for a casual ski through a meadow or to zip down some fun hills, our tours can be customized to fit a variety of athletic levels.

We ditch the groomed trail and head into the meadows and trees for a more scenic experience. It’s a great way to explore the beauty of the forests in the winter. Our skis are wider than traditional cross-country skis, making them ideal for off-trail ski touring.

Skis, boots and poles are included with your tour. We offer both cross-country touring and telemark skis.

Our guides have wilderness first aid certifications and avalanche training, in addition to being experienced outdoorsmen & women. And while they might spend their off-time skiing gnarly backcountry slopes, they are also skilled in breaking down the basics for introductory skis. It’s our mission to provide folks with meaningful outdoor experiences, so you can expect your guide–and all our staff–to be friendly, genuine and caring.

We offer complimentary pick-up and drop off in downtown Steamboat Springs.

Never Nordic skied?

Here's why you should give it a try:

It’s a great way to explore natural settings. When a blanket of several feet of snow covers the ground up here, a pair of skis is your ticket to freedom!  On our tours, we easily navigate through natural landscapes that would be difficult to access during the summer.

It’s great exercise.

Cross-country touring skis feature a free heel, which enables us to trek up hills and earn our glide down! You’ll want to dress in layers because you’ll warm up as you get moving. There is just something so invigorating about getting the heart pumping in the crisp air and beautiful scenery. If you’re looking to be refreshed, this is your activity!

Low impact & less high stakes.

Cross-country skiing is a low impact activity, making it a good option for folks with joint issues. It also isn’t as high speed or high stakes as downhill skiing, so it appeals to a broad range of people.

It’s exhilarating.

Ever hear that cross-country skiing is boring? We’re here to dispel that myth!  With its unparalleled access to nature and varied terrain, our nordic ski tours make for a great winter adventure.

Experience Steamboat Like a Local

Back in the day, when the valley was first settled, this was how folks got around to friends’ houses or to the general store. And to some extent it’s still a valid way of getting around! From the occasional ski to work here at The Outpost or the daily “walk” with the dog, cross-country skiing is an age-old activity firmly rooted in the daily lives of mountain cultures.
