New to snowmobiling in the backcountry?

Snowmobiling in the backcountry is thrilling, but it comes with inherent risks. These risks, such as avalanches, accidents, injuries, and extreme weather conditions, can be greatly mitigated by appropriate knowledge and gear.

Here at the Outpost, it’s our mission to provide folks with incredible outdoor experiences, and part of that is ensuring that our guests have the knowledge and skills necessary to have safe excursions. If you’ve never ridden a mountain sled before, we recommend that you sign up for a Private Guided Experience. We can lead you through basic powder techniques, getting your sled unstuck, and introductory avalanche knowledge.

We also suggest you check out this article for a realistic idea of what snowmobiling out here entails.

If you have ridden before and are choosing a rental over a guided experience, we expect that you come prepared. This means:

  • That you have basic avalanche knowledge and you know where not to go.
  • You are comfortable operating a powder sled, and know how to avoid overheating the machine.
  • You come dressed in appropriate attire.
  • You have wilderness emergency essentials—first aid kits, fire starters, food, water, etc.

That being said, we do a brief orientation with each rental, to ensure that you feel comfortable with the sled and gear before you head out for the day. Avy pack (with beacon, shovel, and probe) and radio included upon request. SPOT locating device also available for an added charge.

Location & Conditions

We are located 25 miles north of Steamboat Springs, in North Routt County.

Steamboat Springs routinely clocks in at the top of lists of the best places to snowmobile in Colorado. While lots of folks are familiar with Rabbit Ears Pass, fewer people make the trek further north. Up here we have terrain for beginner to expert snowmobilers. Miles of groomed trails lead to large open meadows, access to the continental divide, and great riding around Hahn’s Peak, Farwell Mountain and Sand Mountain. Our property is near both National Forest and State Park land.

Check out the map for a sense of how much terrain there is to explore!

Elevation at The Outpost is 8200 ft. We clock an average of 300- 350 inches of snow a year, but in good years, like 2022-2023, that number climbs towards 500 inches.
