We offer Polaris 850 mountain sleds built for backcountry fun and optional trail sleds that can ride only on prepared trails. All sleds are under four years old and come with helmets, goggles, radios, beacons, and avalanche gear if desired, making them ideal for exploring the hundreds of miles of winter terrain around North Routt County.

Snowmobile rentals at Steamboat Lake Outpost are full-day only and include everything you need to ride. You can leave straight from the lodge — no need to trailer your sled or drive to a trailhead! If you’re renting for multiple days, you’ll return the snowmobile at the end of your stay. Drivers must be at least 16 years old with a valid U.S. driver’s license. For international guests, we’re happy to work with you individually to verify licensing based on your country’s requirements.

Yes — you’re free to explore the vast winter terrain in North Routt and Clark County, except for parts that may be temporarily closed for safety. However, please note that the sleds are not registered for travel into Wyoming, so you must stay within Colorado borders.

Renters are responsible for damage up to $2,000, which helps cover repairs if an accident happens. We provide safety gear and a safety briefing before you leave so you can ride responsibly. We’ll make sure you’re fully prepared for your ride so you can enjoy a safe, worry‑free exploration of local snowmobile routes.

Yes — helmets, goggles, and other protective gear are supplied with your rental, and optional avalanche equipment is available for backcountry riding. This is especially valuable when navigating the varied winter conditions in North Routt County.

Yes! Equipment is available for independent adventurers who want to explore North Routt County snow trails on their own. We provide backcountry skis, snowshoes, poles, and boots to help you get started — just pick the gear that best fits your needs.

Each rental includes snowshoes and poles sized for your height. Backcountry ski rentals include boots, poles, and backcountry skis — ideal for soft powder and light elevation gain. Staff can help fit you before you go.

Fitting gear for children under 6 can be tough, especially for backcountry setups. While some smaller sizes are available, most families wait until their child is at least 6 to enjoy our snow adventures in North Routt County.

Not necessarily! The terrain around Steamboat Lake is beginner-friendly, with gentle trails and minimal elevation gain, making it a great place to try backcountry skiing for the first time. While some skiing experience is helpful, many of our guests are new to backcountry adventures. We’re happy to offer guidance on where to go and what to expect.

All rentals are for the full day, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore the snow-covered trails in North Routt County at your own pace. Just return the gear by the end of the day or coordinate with staff if you’re staying longer. Whether you’re snowshoeing through meadows or skiing along gentle ridgelines, you’ll have time to make the most of your adventure.

Epic Package

A true Wild West winter experience?

Looking for a wild west winter? This guided tour includes snowmobiling to the north of Hahns Peak where you’ll strap on your snowshoes and hike to the summit. Enjoy a sack lunch at the top of Hahns Peak then make your way back down on your snowshoes and return to the Outpost with an exhilirating ride to complete your Epic Adventure. $500 per driver and $299 per passenger.

Are you a deep and steep adventurer?  Powder days on the sleds with lunch at the summit, sunny days on cross country skis, chillin’ days on the lake with some beers and ice fishing. Adventure Your Way is a fully customized winter experience that combines activities like snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and more. You can mix and match to build the perfect outdoor adventure in North Routt County. It’s ideal for families, couples, and groups who want a personalized itinerary in the mountains.

The Epic Package combines a 2-hour snowmobile tour, 2-hour snowshoe hike up Hahns Peak, and a return snowmobile ride with a provided lunch. It’s one of the most exciting ways to experience Routt County backcountry terrain. These packages are customizable and great for adventurous travelers.

You’ll need insulated jackets, waterproof snow pants, snow boots, gloves, and warm base layers. Since Clark, Colorado winters can be cold, dry, and windy, it’s best to dress in layers and avoid cotton. Most guests find a winter gear checklist for Routt County helpful when packing.

While snowfall varies each year, the Steamboat Lake area receives heavy snow compared to Steamboat Springs — often 10–15 degrees colder and 2,000 feet higher in elevation. This makes it a great destination for snowmobiling and backcountry skiing.
