When you step into the wild beauty of northwest Colorado and breathe the crisp mountain air, the anticipation of adventure takes over. The Outpost offers a unique backdrop where the thrill of elk and deer hunting meets the peacefulness of nature. While we don’t offer guided hunting, we make your stay easy. Stay in our cozy cabins, eat hearty meals, and spend the evenings around the fire sharing stories of the day’s hunt with fellow adventurers. Whether you’re an experienced bow or rifle hunter or new to the sport, Steamboat Lake Outpost is the perfect place to create unforgettable memories on your next hunting trip. Ready to explore Colorado’s pristine wilderness and embark on a 3-day hunting journey? Archery season just opened and here’s what it could look like at Steamboat Lake Outpost.
Day 1: Arrival and Afternoon Hunt
- Morning:
- Arrive at Steamboat Lake Outpost and check into your cozy cabin
- Visit the Outpost’s supply shop to pick up any last-minute hunting gear and supplies.
- Afternoon:
- Drive to Sand Mountain Trailhead (about 25 minutes from the Outpost)
- Spend the afternoon hunting in the area known for its elk and deer population
- Evening:
- Return to the Outpost for a hearty meal at our on-site restaurant
- Relax by the fire pit or join any evening events, such as live music or BINGO
Day 2: Full-Day Hunting Adventure
- Morning:
- Drive to Slavonia Trailhead (approximately 30 minutes away)
- Spend the morning hunting in this pristine Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest area, home to various game
- Afternoon:
- Continue your hunt or take a break to explore the scenic views of the wilderness
- Enjoy a packed lunch provided by the Outpost’s supply store
- Evening:
- Return to the Outpost to unwind and share stories of the day’s adventures
- Dinner at the restaurant, followed by evening entertainment, like acoustic music or a campfire gathering
Day 3: Morning Hunt and Departure
- Morning:
- Early rise for a final hunt. Consider visiting the Diamond Park North Trailhead.
- Target the morning hours for the best chance of success
- Midday:
- Return to the Outpost for a filling brunch
- Pack up and check out of your cabin
- Afternoon:
- Optionally, you can explore the surrounding areas, such as Steamboat Lake, Pearl Lake, or Hahns Peak Lake, or cast your fly rod in the Elk River. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon before departing.

Store Hours: 8 AM – 9 PM, All Week
Restaurant Hours: Monday – Friday: 4 PM – 9 PM
- Saturday – Sunday:
- Lunch: 11 AM – 2 PM
- Dinner: 4 PM – 9 PM
- We do NOT serve breakfast
- Our store provides breakfast sandwiches, eggs, muffins, cookies, and coffee.
Cabin Checkout:
- Checkout by 10 AM
- If you take down an elk on the day of checkout, we’ll be happy to accommodate a later departure time! We got you!
